For weeks we’ve been locked in a media frenzy surrounding the tragic shooting death of Trayvon Martin perpetrated by George Zimmerman. Hundreds of thousands of people took part in protests and social media campaigns calling for justice for Trayvon. At one point, people mobbed the home of couple in their sixties with frothing mouths reminiscent of the lynch mobs of the old west because a celebrity mistakenly Tweeted their address as George Zimmerman’s. A police chief sort of resigned temporarily. The feds got involved. A special prosecutor got called in. A flawed law finally is getting reviewed. Then there was the arrest and charges.
In our solve it in 60 minutes including commercials need for instant gratification, we have forgotten the two men involved in this tragic incident, George and Trayvon.
Trayvon is a son lost too soon, a promise unfulfilled and the latest face on the senseless violence that is all too prevalent in our society today.
George is a surprisingly average, not at all horn having, non demon who may or may not have allowed preconceived notions of another person’s appearance inform a series of bad decisions.
Unfortunately, the only justice for Trayvon may be the review of Florida’s poorly written Stand Your Ground Law, hopefully preventing a similar tragedy in the future.
Thanks to an overreaching prosecutor charging George with a seemingly unprovable 2nd Degree Murder, the only punishment he will receive is the shame and guilt he already has.
George is no demon, he’s not even evil. He is stupid. He made a series of very stupid decisions that eventually resulted in the death of Trayvon. Should he walk free? Hell no! Will he? Probably.
With a non-glory hound prosecutor, George is charged with Manslaughter. He is then convicted and is sentenced to 15 years, of which he serves 9 1/4 years. That is justice. Isn’t that what everyone claims to want here?
